Ulrum - Delfzijl
Distance: 66.2 km
Arable farming dominates the landscape, which on occasion treats us to a church on a mound. Along the way you can spot oystercatchers, knots and redshanks. Cycling along the Wadden Sea coast you're in with a pretty good chance to spot a seal. Around 1980, grey seals had become a rarity in the Dutch part of the Wadden Sea. Fortunately things have gotten a lot better in recent years. Your best chances of spotting seals are during the pupping season and moulting season. For grey seals this is in December and March/April, respectively, for harbour seals in June and August. The area that you’ve been cycling through since you’ve left the Lauwersmeer behind you, belongs to the municipality of Het Hogeland that was established on 1 January 2019. It’s one of the most expansive municipalities in the Netherlands and extends all the way past the Eemshaven in the east and to the city of Groningen in the south.
