Vlissingen - Burgh Haamstede
Distance: 55.8 km
Via the Westkapelse Zeedijk (Westkapelle Sea Wall) you’ll reach Domburg, the oldest seaside resort on Walcheren. This was once an artists’ colony, frequented by the likes of painters Jan Toorop and Piet Mondrian and poet J.C. van Schagen. In the Marie Tak van Poortvlietmuseum you can see works by members of the old artists’ colony as well as modern visual art. To reach the next Zeeland island, Schouwen-Duiveland, you ride across the 9-kilometre long Oosterscheldekering (Eastern Scheldt storm surge barrier). The 1953 North Sea flood, which cost many people in Zeeland their lives, was the reason to embark on the most extensive Delta Plan ever to offer the Netherlands better protection against water. The Oosterscheldekering is the largest and best known link in this defence system.
